The Real Indian Idol?

Amit Paul is a great singer, no doubt. But he also looks cuter than Prashant Tamang does, according to a lot of women. And this might work against Prashant Tamang, in his race to win the Indian Idol.

Harshit, a fabulous singer and a consistent performer has an old grandmother appealing to the audience to vote for him. It is a heartrending sight to see the toothless old lady bless him on the stage of ‘Voice of India’. Junta (including me) might therefore vote for him, regardless of whether he is the best performer ओर not.

The judges of ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ ensure that they bring in Poonam’s impoverished background, almost every time she sings. It seems like the proverbial rags to almost riches story and the audience cant help feel sad for the girl who fought all odds to make it to the ‘Sa Re Ga Ma Pa’ stage.

It felt really sad last night to see a great singer like Abhaas leave the contest because he has the least votes from the audience, despite judges declaring him to be one of the best singers in the contest.

And this seems to be the story across almost all singing talent hunts. When the panel of judges contains esteemed names from the music industry, why does the audience need to decide on who is the better among the best? Aren’t the judges capable enough to do so? Can’t the audience just sit back and relax, and enjoy a beautiful musical journey, while leaving the tough task of judging to the experts, to figure out who does greater justice to the finer nuances of singing?

And who is really benefiting from the audience votes – Not the best contestants, I am sure.

Would the winner declared based on the audience votes, be the real winner? Would (s)he be the real ‘Indian Idol’ that people could use as an example of a fine singer for their kith and kin to emulate, or just someone who won a contest, recorded an album and then faded off into oblivion like many others before him/her?

Seems to me that the latter is likely to happen unless the experts are allowed to make their choice.

Aren’t we forgetting something? All these 'Talent Hunt' and other such shows gets to make a lot of maal from the so called SMS poll, All these SMS fall under the ‘premium service’ category, and are charged much higher than our normal SMS rates.

Now when we have a crowd which is ready to message out YES, NO or the participants name without second thoughts, then all the producer needs to do is get into a profit sharing agreement with the Bulk SMS operator and rake money.

So its not exactly talent that they are looking at, but a good, reliable, proven way of making some quick buck.

@kiranar: yes everybodys knows abt it.and if given a chance anybdy wish to make thosa extra bucks. wat v talking abt is the actual real talent loss and wat shud be the best strcture to prevent dat.

@Preetz: Dear i m also following these shows as u do, regularly. Feel bad if ppl like Toshi are left out bcz of the voting system. but u never know if the judges (judgement) will also not b influenced by anything. It did, u might have seen in earlier episodes of "Sa re ga ma". how sumtimes the best one ws left out, i remember the wrst performance of MAuli on the show and the judge gave her the green signal.
Wats ur take on dat dear??

@Sari: Like you had said, a lot of 'really' talented people loose out, thanks to these things. But is there something we could do to stop this gross injustice? I mean we cannot ban these TV shows from having SMS poll and Audience poll, can we?

@Kiran - You are right about who is really laughing all the way to the bank. I really wonder if someone would like to do something about this - after all everyone sees their own profits.
Unless the stalwarts in the music industry put their foot down and speak up on how these contests do not really select the best singers, I don't see how the popularity of these shows will ever diminish. The audience is always influenced by people's opinion. So if a bunch of credible souls speak up, they would probably get influenced by that too.

@ Sari - What I would think would be an ideal scenario is the singers having mentors on the show who should not judge a person's performance. The judges, who are established names in the music indusry, should change on a weekly basis (like the way it used to be in Sa Re Ga Ma years ago) and the audience should just watch the performances, not vote for them. But sigh, that would be a clean contest, with no dirty linen being washed in public, no accusations at each other, no favouritism and therefore no sensationalism in the show.
